Dean Howells    DipNEBOSH, MIIRSM, RMaPS, GradIOSH,

Managing Director

Dean has over 20 year’s experience of managing health & safety in a variety of industries and business environments. Following successful careers in construction management and facilities management, both of which involved significant responsibilities for the safety of employees

and the public, Dean’s passion for safety ultimately led him to form his own consultancy.

Dean was the Safety Officer for Rushden & Diamonds Football Club for 12 years, during which time he also became the Club’s General Manager.

Dean has achieved the  National Examination Board in Occupational Safety & Health,  Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, and is a member of the International Institute

of Risk & Safety Management as well as a graduate member of the Institute of

Occupational Safety & Health.

Dean’s skills & competencies and enthusiasm for safety, combined with a keen awareness

of commercial responsibilities make him ideally placed to assist companies to manage

health & safety efficiently and cost effectively.

Tracy Howells    B.Ed Hons, Director

Tracy has over 20 years experience in commerce. With a CIPD qualification in recruitment she has particular expertise of business administration, human resources and recruitment & training.

Prior to joining Essential Safety, Tracy worked as a recruitment  

Cathie Madigan    RGN, Ergonomics Consultant

Cathie possesses a wealth of experience and expertise as a General Practitioner Nurse and neurosurgical intensive care Sister. Cathie has more recently gone on to specialise in back care, spending 5 years as

a Senior Ergonomic and Manual Handling Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead NHS Trust, London, during which time she  

provided expert advice and guidance for complex patient manual handling issues.

Cathie can provide specialist consultancy services to Clients in a wide range of ergonomic and manual handling areas including manual handling assessments & training; Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments & training; Ergonomic workplace & product assessments & evaluation; Specialist ergonomic advisory services for employee / client handling issues.

Cathie’s services and advice will benefit organisations with general ergonomic / manual handling requirements or those with specific employee issues which they may have otherwise found difficult to resolve.

Tony holds the National Examination Board in Occupational Health General Certificate and has gained extensive managerial and strategic experience over many years working at a senior level in the Public Sector. Tony has managed large Inland Revenue offices of up 350 staff, and has developed considerable Human Resources expertise having

also been Deputy Human Resources Director for the London Region.

As the Inland Revenues Business Environment manager Tony led strategic development of

Health & Safety, Estates, Security, Business Continuity and Sustainable Development policies. Latterly Tony managed a team of internal management consultants responsible for strategic & business analysis, organisation design and efficiency programmes.

Tony’s extensive experience of the management of health & safety within a large public-sector organisation, combined with his skills in strategic business analysis & organisation make him an important member of the Essential team.

John Pratt  Fire Safety Consultant - photograph being updated
John has over 20 years experience of fire safety. He has worked as a practitioner, technical adviser and more recently as a Fire Protection Officer for the Fire and Rescue Service, where he has been responsible for the inspection of non – domestic premises and the enforcement of Fire Protection standards and policy.
Previously John had a successful career in the Royal Air Force as a Leading Fire Fighter where he conducted fire safety inspections and audits of MOD premises, produced fire safety management plans incorporating fire risk assessments and provided fire safety training and instruction to staff.
John’s continuous professional development means he has excellent up to date knowledge of Fire Safety legislation, enforcement and risk assessment and provides advice in a clear and concise manner.
